New spaces for new music! Under this motto, the competition “ohrenstrand mobil 08” – organized by Zeitgenössischen Oper Berlin and ohrenstrand.net – has called upon architects, construction engineers, and artists to design unconventional and multifaceted spaces for contemporary music, spaces that offer the most diverse formats and which act as mobile and temporary exhibition and sound windows, and which are to be capable of being set up at various locations in Berlin. This architectural form for conveying music is sponsored by the Netzwerk Neue Musik of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
Participating in the initial phase of the competition – announced in May of 2008 – were altogether 134 teams from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. 31 applicants were selected for the second round. The jury – composed of curators, organizers, and architects – selected the prizewinners in September of 2008.
The 1st Prize (2000 €) went to Nuremberg architects René Rissland and Jürgen Lehmeier of eyland 07. For the competition “ohrenstrand mobil 08,” they developed a piece of architecture that could be assembled in extraordinarily flexible ways and which was composed of individual acoustic modules, and which optimally unites the functions of absorption, diffusion, and reflection. The manner of functioning of the resultant acoustic space can be experienced for the first time now at Aedes, where the architects will implant their design on a scale of 1:1. Planned for the exhibition phase are a number of musical performances designed to test the acoustic and flexible properties of this «TonRaumArchitektur» (SoundSpaceArchitecture). The inauguration of «ohrenstrand mobil» will take place on 13 February 2009 with a performance of “Layers News Opera.”
The recipients of the 2nd Prize (1500 €) were Robert Schwarz and Mark Neuner of Divany (Vienna), with their «Raumadapter» (Space Adapter), a suspended construction composed of Styrofoam elements.
The third prize went to AG J.-P. E. R. Sonntag and CC.Mehlhose + Thomas Reinke (Berlin) for HOSOC, the HoveringSonicCap, a freely adjustable, helium–filled sound lid that represents a logical development of Richard Wagner’s «Schalldeckel» (sound lid).
Presented in the exhibition as models are the remaining competition designs, which display the most diverse conceptual, formal, and material approaches to fulfilling the assigned task.
The competition «ohrenstrand mobil» will be repeated in 2009.
Speaking at the opening will be Kristin Feireiss of Aedes and Andreas Rochholl of Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin.
