Record visitor numbers for furniture, building materials & hardware, environmental protection, sports goods fairs in Hong Kong

Hong Kong International Furniture Fair, Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair, Eco Expo Asia and Sports Source Asia have registered record-breaking buyer attendance figure this year. Concurrently held in AsiaWorld-Expo from 28 to 31 October, 2008, these four fairs reached a record high visitor figure of more than 30,000. Among the buyers were members of 170 buying missions from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Chinese Mainland, co-ordinated by the fairs’ organisers.

Over 800 exhibitors from around the world participated, including first-time exhibitors from Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Pakistan and Sweden. Exhibitor comment reflected a high level of satisfaction with the buyer turn-out and quality.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council works with four well-established co-organisers to bring the fairs to this level: respectively, Kenfair International Limited, CIEC Exhibition Company (HK) Limited, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd. and MMI - Munich International Trade Fairs Pte Ltd..

International and local exhibitors expressed eagerness to return in 2009 and indicated positive outcomes from their participation.

Hong Kong International Furniture Fair
Liam Noonan, Director of Rainbow in Australia, commented, “This is our second time here, and last year was excellent. We only had one stand last year, but this year we have taken two. We picked up a lot of customers last year, from Russia, Egypt, Africa and a few other countries. We also feel that people coming on to the stand are really serious buyers, whereas in Dongguan or Singapore or Kuala Lumpur you get too many time wasters. That’s the advantage here. You get fewer people but more sales. Yes, we’ll be back next year.”

A Hong Kong exhibitor, Jason Chen, Export Dept. Manager of Hong Kong Hua Lin Industrial & Development Co. Ltd. said, “This is the second time for our company to show here. I think it is a very good show and we are very satisfied with the organisation. We have seen many buyers and we expect to be in contact after the show, and to receive orders. I think we will be back next year.”

Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair

“We take part in many exhibitions, and we were here last year. We have made some useful business contacts and the experience has been good,” Indonesian exhibitor Dian Herdiana, Marketing Executive of PT Swabina Karya Indonesia, remarked.

A first time exhibitor, Benjamin Meriau, General Manager of The Bamboo Factory in Vietnam, summed up his experience. “This is the first time I’ve been to a Hong Kong trade fair. The organisational support has been very satisfying. We have appointments this afternoon with some potential customers. We would come back next year. I think it is a good place to be.”

Eco Expo Asia

Brian Pemberton, Founder and CEO of a local environmentally-friendly bag manufacturer, reSACKel, said, “We have made some great contacts at this show from all over the world. The feedback has been extremely positive – more than we expected.”

A Japanese exhibitor, Takahisa Watanabe, President of Mitsuboshi Cutlery Co Ltd, commented, “We have had so many opportunities to meet new customers from different countries and from related industries. I am sure that we will return next year.”

Sports Source Asia

An exhibitor from China, Sanjiv Mahbubani, Director of Global Marketing of Xtep (China) Co. Ltd., expressed his satisfaction. “We exhibited here last year and got very good feedback. This is why we are back this year with a larger booth. We chose to exhibit in the Premium Zone as this sets us apart. It places us in an area where we’re targeted by people who know what they want. Judging from the results after last year’s show, the event has been quite effective in increasing awareness of our brand as well attracting more of our target clientele.”

Sharaz Ahmed Soofi, Director of KSK Sports in Pakistan, said, “Hong Kong is a hub for brand names with many head offices. This makes the show a great opportunity for everyone in the sports article business. It was a great idea for us to come to this exhibition. We’ve already had a very good response from potential new clients – it’s been fantastic!”

International buyers were delighted to see a wide selection of products for sourcing and business development.

Hong Kong International Furniture Fair
“Everything is very well organised, and there is a good range of exhibitors. It is a busy fair, and we have found some new suppliers,” Mylene H. Co, Director of Universal Colmsen Fashion Centre in the Philippines, said.

“My impressions of the furniture fair are very positive. Really I wasn’t expecting so many new ideas. I go constantly to exhibitions in Europe – Milan, Paris – and this fair is good. I was here two years ago for the first time. I am going to place some orders for furniture. It has been very interesting. I would like to come back next year,” commented Valeriy Koskov, President of De Light in Russia.

Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair
Pham Nguyen Bao Khanh, Vice Director of Thuong Tin Commercial Construction Material Company in Vietnam, was satisfied with the exhibits and will come back next year, “This is my first time here. We have some building projects in Vietnam and we need to find some new building materials suppliers and products. It’s very well organised. Yes, I would like to come back next year. I am making a lot of useful contacts, and later we will be placing orders for our projects.”

Eco Expo Asia
A buyer from Mauritius, Daniel Li Yen Pin, Managing Director of Integrity Solutions Provider Ltd, travelled a long way to visit, “This is my first time visiting this show and I plan to attend three full days to meet with solar water heater suppliers and to attend the Eco Asia Conference seminars. We have already short-listed three possible suppliers and are very close to signing a contract with one of them.”

The 14 sessions of the Eco Asia Conference, with over 800 attendees, were a highlight of Eco Expo Asia. Nach Tam Nga Chiu, Teaching Associate of Department of Engineering, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, said, “I attended the sessions on air quality and waste management & recycling. The presentations were very detailed, innovative and the speakers were quite knowledgeable as well.”

Sports Source Asia

Jim Craddock, Commercial Director of Modern Teaching Aids Pty Ltd in Australia, remarked, “Asia represents an ideal sourcing base for us. This event is a marriage between good products and good sourcing. I’ve not been here long and already I’ve found some very interesting items. The show is everything I expected it would be – and more! It looks as if it’s going to represent everything that I need in a sports show.“

Barbara Basso, Buyer of Iniziative Group in Italy, expressed satisfaction with this fair. “This has been a new fair for me and it has been worth coming. The selection of suppliers is good and I’ve been able to make direct contact with manufacturers. The fair has made a good impression on me so I will come back.”

The positive comments from exhibitors and visitors on all four fairs are a pointer to future progress. The fairs will continue to go from strength to strength as all industry players seek the most effective way to find new products and access new markets.
